Read the light first
Shade is not one condition. Dappled light under a tree, bright indirect light by a north window and deep shade beside a wall each suit different plants.
Watch the spot across a whole day before you buy — two hours of direct morning sun changes what will grow there.
Plants that love the shade
Monstera, ZZ plants, peace lilies and ferns all thrive without direct sun. Their broad, dark leaves are built to catch low light.
- Rotate pots a quarter turn each week for even growth.
- Water less often than sun-grown plants — shade soil dries slowly.
- Wipe leaves monthly so dust doesn't block what light there is.
